Butlers and servants – household duties

Butlers and valets take care of all the personal services that make their employer’s private life easier. They serve coffee and the daily newspaper – at the bedside first thing in the morning if desired – and lay out a suit and the matching tie, a colour-coordinated shirt and the shoes. A valet’s duties also include placing shoes on shoe trees after they have been worn, polishing them, inspecting them for any defects, and taking them to be repaired and collecting them again independently.

Furthermore, the butler is responsible for serving meals correctly: He has laid out the correct plates, cups, glasses and matching cutlery, fetched the bread rolls and is waiting to be allowed to pour his employer a fresh cup of coffee or tea, or – during main meals – a suitable wine to accompany the meal.

With his impeccable sense of style, the butler relieves his employer of all concerns regarding etiquette: the butler takes charge of welcoming and registering guests, suggests wines or spirits to accompany the meal, and pours the drinks into the appropriate glasses. Beforehand, he has placed the correct cutlery in the proper order next to the plates.

A butler carries out errands, does the shopping and runs personal errands for his employer. He prepares baths and can also undertake personal care tasks such as manicures or, in some cases, hairstyling. Depending on the agreed scope of duties, a butler may also be called upon to do the washing, cleaning or cooking. Chauffeur services can also be provided by the butler.

Added to this are the ceremonial duties of a valet: he greets guests, holds the carriage door open for them, brings them their chosen drink at a party, or announces their arrival to his employer after opening the door and taking their coat. Butlers and servants may also be employed to teach the children of the household table manners, etiquette and courtesy.

What are the advantages of having a servant in the house?

A butler provides a traditional service, tailored personally to his employer. He takes care of everything for him. A butler is on hand in a private household to fulfil all the employer’s wishes promptly, discreetly but effectively. This includes, for example, serving coffee in bed in the morning, laying out a matching shirt, tie, suit and shoes, and setting the breakfast table. The servant should also lay out the daily newspaper and always be on hand to top up the client’s coffee and attend to other family members or guests.

Thanks to his impeccable manner and quick wit, a butler is always able to discreetly assist his employer with hosting and representational duties. He also takes care of washing, drying and ironing clothes, as well as cleaning; his duties may also include housekeeping and cooking.

What qualifications should a servant have?

Training in the hospitality industry – such as a qualification as a hotel or restaurant manager – is an advantage when it comes to setting the table with style and demonstrating impeccable manners. Waiters or butlers should be quick on the uptake, empathetic and willing to accept irregular working hours, such as working at weekends, at night or having to get up early.

Butlers should be well-versed in etiquette and able to use their expert knowledge to serve the right wine with the right dish. There is no legally defined training programme – neither for servants nor for butlers.
